Design process and methods

Research methods

We used the double diamond design process method in our project. First we needed to get a deeper understanding on the industry, then define our results, start developing the product, and finally deliver the product to the customer. We determined our research methods to be competitor audit, stakeholder analysis and interview.

Competitor audit

We audited competitors to uncover their strengths and weaknesses, aiming to define a unique value proposition for Anton Grün.

Stakeholder analysis

We conducted a stakeholder analysis to gain deeper insights into Anton Grün's potential clients and other stakeholders which would eventually affect on our design propositions.

Interview

We opted for interviews to understand the needs and expectations of potential customers seeking an architect for their projects, as well as to gain insights into the architect hiring process.

Research

Competitor audit

We conducted a competitive analysis based on information about the company provided by the client. We extensively researched the websites and portfolios of German and Finnish architects, as well as delving into the competitive analysis targets sent by the client themselves.

Through the competitive analysis, we gained an understanding of architecture as an industry. We noticed that many architects have similar information on their websites. This allowed us to offer the client a proposal to stand out from the crowd content-wise.

Stakeholder analysis

We thoroughly mapped the client’s stakeholders, taking into account the client’s special expertise and all the services they offer.

We included in the stakeholder map the client’s own customers, building material sellers, organizations with similar special expertise, and various partners. As our client had such special expertise in the industry, we concluded that emphasizing that on their site would give them a chance to stand out and also to find their target customers.

Interview

We got a chance to interview a construction company’s project manager who often works with architects. We decided on the interview questions by going through our earlier research results. We realised that we didn’t have enough information about Anton Grün’s potential clients but also their needs and pain points.

Define

Research summary

We got a clear picture of architecture and the client’s areas of expertise through competitive analysis, stakeholder mapping, and the interview. We concluded that the client’s work practices are up-to-date and distinctive, and based on the competitive analysis, the client’s specialization in sustainable and modern wood construction should be emphasized.

Based on these research results, we made three user personas.

Ideation

We began to design the wireframes based on our earlier insights as well as utilising heuristics. We ended up creating three different wireframe options and ended up combining features from each option into one cohesive wireframe, which we presented to the customer.

The customer wished we could make a few design proposals for them and we ended up creating two different options. We ended up choosing the second one as the plank in the logo most emphasised the Anton Grün’s expertise in wood building.

Deliver

The wireframe was first developed into a prototype in Figma and afterwards into WordPress where the final site was published.
